WMA Ended Relationship With Wie Before Her Move To IMG

Report Has Wie Being Fired By WMA
Prior To Her Signing With IMG
Golfer MICHELLE WIE's move to IMG for representation was "borne of necessity," as Wie was "fired by her former management firm, the Williams Morris Agency," according to a source cited by Steve Elling of CBSSPORTS.com. The source said that the move began when WMA last fall "declined to sign Wie to another in a series of one-year contracts, which is part of the standard WMA protocol." Wie's WMA agent "elected to continue personally counseling the Wie family," but that ended when WMA "learned that the Wies were negotiating with a sports-drink manufacturer for an endorsement deal behind WMA's back." The source said that "at that point, any ties were quickly severed for good and Wie turned to IMG" (CBSSPORTS.com, 3/25).

WINNING CURES EVERYTHING: In Honolulu, Ferd Lewis noted Wie in her career has "pocketed millions of dollars in endorsements and sponsorships, gone through umpteen caddies and three agents, not to mention injuries and controversies." There is "only so much spin even IMG ... can supply to flagging production," which is why it "behooves her to demonstrate success." Wie turns 20 years old in October, and the "phenom designation has faded in the face of an onslaught by other young players who have been winning," as others have "not only won but done it in LPGA majors." And Wie's "lucrative sponsorship deals that are reported to pay in the ballpark of $12[M] annually are in the waning months" (HONOLULU ADVERTISER, 3/24).
