NFL Franchise Notes: Former Eagles Dir Of Comm. Sues Team

Grant Files Lawsuit
Against Eagles
In Philadelphia, Vernon Clark reports former Eagles Dir of Communications Bonnie Grant Saturday in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia "filed a lawsuit against the team, contending she was discriminated against because of her sex and health." The lawsuit indicated that the Eagles "learned Grant had breast cancer through her work to raise awareness about the disease," and the suit "without elaborating ... adds that Grant then was subjected to 'petty and unsupported discipline.'" The lawsuit indicated that Grant, who began working for the Eagles in October '05, was "fired 'summarily and without warning' and without cause" on October 12, 2007 (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 3/26).

SIGNIFICANT DROP: Packers President & CEO Mark Murphy said that the team's '08 revenues will be "'quite a bit less' than 2007 when figures are released later this year." FOXSPORTS.com's Alex Marvez noted the team turned a $22M profit from operations in '07. Murphy: "From a net standpoint, we're pretty strong. But we're sensitive to the economy. The problems with the current [CBA] have been amplified by the economy." Murphy added that the team's Packers Pro Shop sales were "'very soft' and its annual Fan Fest didn't sell out for the first time" (FOXSPORTS.com, 3/24).

OUT TO SEA: In Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde wrote of Dolphins Enterprises CEO Joe Bailey, "Remember him?" The only place Bailey "seems to have a voice is on his radio segment of the Dolphin radio hour." Bailey "once was a behind-the-curtain power at the Dolphins," but "then came his two big decisions." First Bailey convinced former Dolphins Owner Wayne Huizenga that former coach Cam Cameron "was the man (with Randy Mueller in the front office)," and then Bailey "pushed for" a $300M Dolphins Stadium renovation. As a result, Bailey was "muted and downsized in the final year of Huizenga's era," and now the question is whether Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross "will listen to him at all" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 3/25).

Panthers Seeking Corporate
Sponsor From Auto Industry
ECONOMIC IMPACT: In Charlotte, Charles Chandler notes the Panthers are "still seeking to fill a yearlong void of an official corporate sponsor from the automotive industry." Panthers President Mark Richardson: "I'm not sure it's going to change between now and the start of the season." But Richardson said that the Panthers' "other main sponsorships haven't been affected" by the economy. He added that it was a "difficult decision to lay off more than 10[%] of the organization's 160 employees" on February 17. Richardson: "We are having to make tough decisions and look at each area and where we spend money. Head count (of) personnel is one of them." Richardson said that "big player salaries and layoffs both were necessary to grow the overall company despite criticism that the moves appeared incongruent." Richardson also said that the team is "waiting to see whether any of their PSL holders will miss the April 20 deadline to pay for 2009 season tickets, thus going into default and risking their forfeiture of their PSLs" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 3/26).

NEW ERA: In Detroit, Nicholas Cotsonika reports the Lions "will keep training camp at team headquarters this year, and they will keep it open to the public," though they are "open to moving it in the future." Meanwhile, Lions President Tom Lewand "declined to say much about the Lions' new logo, which was apparently leaked when someone discovered a toy truck for sale on nflshop.com on Tuesday" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 3/26). Also in Detroit, Jamie Samuelsen wrote of the logo, "From what leaked yesterday, I'm not really impressed. If you're going to change it, change it. Don't make subtle little adjustments to the thing. Dramatically alter it" (FREEP.com, 3/25).
