EPL Club ManU Set To Keep AIG Logo On Uniforms For '09-10 Season

ManU Seeking New Sponsor
To Replace AIG After '09-10
EPL club Manchester United will feature the AIG logo "on their shirts for another season despite attempts" by the company to "rebrand its 'wounded and disgraced' name," according to Mark Ogden of the London TELEGRAPH. ManU is "seeking a new sponsor to replace" the four-year, US$82.2M deal with AIG that expires at the end of the '09-10 season. The club is "confident of securing a lucrative agreement by the autumn, with both Saudi Telecom and Indian financial services company Sahara linked with replacing AIG." But with next season's ManU kits -- "due to be launched in China on the first-leg of the club's Far East tour in July -- already in production with the AIG logo in place, moves by AIG to change its name to AIU could leave United with a redundant sponsor for the duration" of the '09-10 season. A Nike spokesperson said for the '09-10 season, all ManU jerseys and training products "have been produced with the AIG logo in line with the company's continued sponsorship of the club." Ogden notes ManU is "due to receive the final [US$20.4M] installment from AIG ahead of the start of next season," but AIG, "rather than United or Nike, would be forced to foot the prohibitive cost of any logo changes on next term's kit" (London TELEGRAPH, 3/26). PHOENIX BUSINESS JOURNAL's Mike Sunnucks reported U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor (D-AZ) wants the company to "drop its sponsorship" of ManU. AIG said that it "won't renew that deal in 2010 when it ends, but also indicated it would not leave the sponsorship pact early" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/25).
