Tiger Hosts CEOs In Attempt To Court PGA Tour Sponsors

Tiger Hosts Breakfast And Clinic For
Approximately Dozen CEOs In Orlando
Tiger Woods "entertained approximately a dozen CEOs and sponsorship domos Monday" at his home course of Isleworth Country Club in Orlando in response to PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem's call for players to be more committed to the Tour, according to Steve Elling of CBSSPORTS.com. Woods "hosted a breakfast and a clinic on the driving range for the corporate bigwigs" before golfers Chris DiMarco, Nick O'Hern and Ryuji Imada "played 18 holes with the influential amateurs." The Woods outing is "exactly the type of glad-handing Finchem alluded to in the offseason, because the tour needs to ensure that the battle-weary sponsors -- tournament contracts with 18 events are set to expire after 2010 -- might re-up down the road." Finchem: "I think players have been interacting with sponsors. I think they have been very helpful this year -- exceedingly helpful. I think they are always helpful, but they have stepped up this year. It's good." Finchem added "there's been some movement" in regard to his "plea for players to add dates not usually included on their playing schedules." But Elling noted with one-third of the FedEx Cup regular season complete, the plea "hasn't had much effect at all" -- players who finished in the top 30 on the '08 money list have "actually combined to play in fewer events at this point in the season when compared to last year." As a result, "even in these uncertain times, some players seem slow on the uptake." Elling: "Signed to personal multi-year sponsorship deals with companies and manufacturers, the urgency of the broader tour situation seemingly hasn't yet been fully grasped" (CBSSPORTS.com, 3/24).

LADIES' TURN: Execs from J Golf and some of the more prominent companies in Korea took part in yesterday's pro-am at the J Golf Phoenix LPGA Int’l presented by Mirassou Winery. J Golf, the LPGA’s Korean TV partner beginning next year, hosted leaders from other Korean companies including Kia, LG Electronics, Korean Air, SK Telecom and Kumho Tire, none of whom are currently involved with the LPGA. They were paired with Korean LPGA members Se Ri Pak, Ji-Yai Shin and Seon-Hwa Lee, as well as Korean-American Michelle Wie. J Golf made a presentation to LPGA execs and sponsors last night in Phoenix about expanding the exposure of golf in Korea (Jon Show, SportsBusiness Journal).
