Cubs Deny Report That Team Seeks Up To 50 Night Games Per Season

Cubs Play Down Report That Team Officials
Hope To Hold 50 Night Games Per Season
The Cubs Tuesday "played down reports ... that team officials hope to hold as many as 50 night games a season, an issue that arose as the team held its annual meeting with Wrigleyville residents," according to James Janega of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. The Marco Island Sun Times Tuesday reported Cubs Chair Crane Kenney on Monday said that he "hoped the Cubs would increase the number of night games from 30 to 50." But Cubs Senior VP/Community Affairs & General Counsel Mike Lufrano Tuesday said that there is "no such plan in the short term." Lufrano: "We're not asking for anything. We're not looking for anything this year" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/25).

TAKING A HIT: Kenney Monday said that the economy "will impact Major League attendance this season, which is expected to drop for the first time in 10 years." Kenney: "Our game is in great shape, but we're in an economy we haven't seen before. We're seeing a contraction of our sources of revenue." Kenney added, "Baseball is healthy. From my perspective, I'd like to see [players'] salaries come back to earth a little bit" (Marco Island SUN TIMES, 3/24).

SALE HEADED FOR HOME: Lufrano said that the Cubs "hoped to close the sale of the team to the Ricketts family 'by Opening Day or shortly after that'" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/25). Madison Dearborn Partners Chair & CEO John Canning Jr., who was among the bidders for the Cubs, Tuesday said the Cubs sale is "going to happen with the Ricketts family." Canning: "I've met them. ... The only one that really could ever finance the deal was the Ricketts once we fell out. I think [MLB] is very comfortable. It's family ownership. They're good people. They're looking at it as something they'll hold forever so it's a good thing for [MLB]" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/24).
