Coca-Cola Unveils New Green Initiatives For '10 Vancouver Games

Moran (l) Says Coca-Cola Expects To Spend
Less Than $100,000 On Carbon Offsets
Coca-Cola workers at the '10 Vancouver Games "will wear clothing made from recycled plastic bottles," according to Bruce Constantineau of the VANCOUVER SUN. Coca-Cola, an IOC TOP sponsor, unveiled the green initiative Tuesday "as part of a 'holistic environmental action plan' to minimize its carbon footprint." About 550 Coca-Cola employees working at the Games "will don the environmentally-friendly clothing -- not including footwear -- made from a blend of cotton and recycled plastic." The company will also "use about 1,400 state-of-the-art coolers and vending machines that eliminate almost all direct greenhouse gas emissions by replacing current technology that uses hydrofluorocarbons." The updated units, which "use carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, will be placed throughout Games venues." It will be Coca-Cola's "first use of the technology in North America," and the company "estimates they will collectively cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 5,600 tonnes." Coca-Cola "will use hybrid or high-efficiency delivery vehicles during the Games and ensure 100[%] collection of plastic containers used in Olympic villages." The company "plans to buy 'gold standard' carbon offsets to compensate for an estimated 3,000 tonnes of emissions from its Games-related vehicles, air travel and energy used by temporary warehouse and venue beverage coolers." Coca-Cola Communications Dir Dave Moran said that the company has "spent millions of dollars on Games sustainability initiatives, but expects to spend less than $100,000 on carbon offsets" (VANCOUVER SUN, 3/25).
