Angelos Showing Interest In
Helping Maryland Keep Preakness |
Orioles Owner Peter Angelos Thursday said that he or his family is "poised to help Maryland keep the Preakness Stakes," whose "fate has been imperiled" by the recent bankruptcy filing of its owner, Magna Entertainment Corp. (MEC), according to a front-page piece by Smitherman & Dechter of the Baltimore SUN. Angelos Thursday night met with Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and State Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, and the three "discussed concerns that a buyer could move the Preakness out of state and the possibility of Angelos stepping forward as an investor." Angelos after the meeting said, "This is not an effort to gain a proprietary interest. I'm just giving my support. On the other hand, if my involvement or my family's involvement in such a proprietary interest is a necessary component of keeping the Preakness in Maryland, that's also available." Miller, a "longtime supporter of the racing industry" who earlier this week suggested that the state could buy the Preakness if MEC sells it, said that the group Thursday night "also discussed the potential pitfalls and complications of Magna's situation." Miller indicated that "other potential investors might be interested in buying the tracks or the Preakness," noting that MEC Chair Frank Stronach and former Maryland Jockey Club Owner Joseph De Francis, who sold his controlling interest Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course to MEC in '02, "could remain involved" (Baltimore SUN, 3/20).
CRAB CAKES AND HORSE RACING? In Baltimore, Bill Ordine acknowledged "throwing taxpayer money at something seemingly as frivolous as horse racing is a tough sell these days, considering the broad sentiment against public bailouts." But the idea of Maryland acquiring Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course, as well as the Preakness, and "embarking on a supertrack project in the longer term would be a prudent and far-sighted use of public dollars." However, the Baltimore SUN's David Steele argued the city "needs an arena far more" than a racetrack. Baltimore still is "being underserved by the decrepit, obsolete 1stMariner Arena," and the "possibilities, and revenues, created by a top-notch arena to match Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium are plentiful and well documented" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 3/19).
ALL IN THE FAMILY: MEC parent company MI Developments (MID) CEO Dennis Mills Tuesday said that MID "will likely bid on properties still owned by Magna if and when they are offered at auction later this year." The DAILY RACING FORM's Matt Hegarty noted MID's interest in MEC properties "could result in the near total consolidation of Magna's former assets under" MID. Several racing officials who are owed money by MEC this week said that they believed that the "intent of the bankruptcy reorganization was to place the Magna assets under the control" of MID. Both companies are controlled by Stronach (DRF.com, 3/19).
