Green With Envy? Several Teams Upset With St. Patty's Jerseys

Many Raptors Players Didn't Enjoy Wearing
Green Jerseys, Too Similar To Celtics
The Raptors during their last two games -- last night against the Bobcats in Charlotte and Sunday night at home against the Pacers -- have worn green jerseys inspired by St. Patrick's Day, but Raptors fans "who care about little things like team identity and taking pride in the uniform ... were not exactly amused," according to Dave Feschuk of the TORONTO STAR. Raptors President & GM Bryan Colangelo "pointed out that the St. Patrick's Day merchandising was an initiative of the league office," but said that it was "'awkward' to see his team decked in a Celtics identifier." However, he "acknowledged the team 'bought in' to the plan." Raptors G Anthony Parker said of the gear, "I've already registered my complaint. ... It was a little odd wearing somebody else's logo on my shirt." Raptors F Chris Bosh said the effort was "wackness." But Raptors C Patrick O'Bryant said, "Everybody's saying it's the Celtics logo. It's just a clover, a symbol of Ireland" (TORONTO STAR, 3/16). Meanwhile, an NBA source said that the Lakers were "quietly not in favor" of similar St. Patrick's Day apparel, since the "green and the shamrocks are associated with their heated rivals, the Celtics." But in Boston, Marc Spears noted the green Lakers gear "actually sold well when it first went on the market" (BOSTON GLOBE, 3/15).

  • What is even more absurd is how the Celtics don't even get a home game on St. Patricks day. The league needs to make March 17th a Celtic holiday and always ensure they have a game on that day.
