Loria Speaks Out Ahead Of Votes For Proposed Marlins Ballpark

Marlins Must Pass Two Upcoming Votes
To Receive Approval For Proposed Ballpark
The Marlins "need four out of five votes" in a Thursday vote by Miami City Commissioners for approval of the team's proposed new ballpark, and if the Marlins are successful in that vote, the team will "need nine of 13 votes" in a March 23 vote by Miami-Dade County Commissioners for the proposal to pass, according to Pete Pelegrin of the MIAMI HERALD. Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria yesterday said, "The timing for the stadium could not be better and to get this stadium built now is the perfect time. Our nation is embarking on its largest public/private partnership. ... People need jobs, people need paychecks and the time to get it done is now. ... There will always be people who are opposed to progress. This is a positive thing for Florida." Loria added the Marlins are "not for sale." Loria: "I've heard this since 2002. We're like seven or eight years later now. I'm interested in building something great here for South Florida and for this community and seeing it flourish" (MIAMI HERALD, 3/16). Loria, "speaking public for the first time this spring," said that he is "optimistic that both the Miami City Commission and the Miami-Dade County Commission will approve the $609[M] ballpark at the site of the Orange Bowl." Loria: "I never think of 'what if?' I am thinking positively about the stadium. It is good for Florida and it's good for the community and there's just no other way to think" (PALM BEACH POST, 3/16).

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: In Ft. Lauderdale, Sarah Talalay reported the Marlins, the NAACP and the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce Friday signed an agreement to "guarantee 15[%] of stadium construction and operation contracts go to black-owned businesses." The deal provides 15% of the team's contribution to the stadium "in construction contracts and 15[%] of its contracts for products and services used in the annual operation of the venue to those businesses" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 3/13).
