New WEEI Web Site Part Of Effort To Become Online Destination

WEEI-AM Hopes Site Will Position Station As
Top-Tier Source Of Local Sports News
WEEI-AM in Boston today will roll out a redesigned Web site, an effort more than six months in the making and one designed to position the all-sports radio station as a top-tier source of local sports news along with newspaper outlets the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. Constructed with the aid of interactive agency Virilion and Massachusetts-based search outfit EveryZing, the new WEEI.com features more than four dozen pieces of original text and audio content per day in addition to the re-organized live and on-demand material from the terrestrial radio feed, a continuation of the syndication of Curt Schilling’s 38 Pitches blog that began in November, and an expansion of mobile functionality to enable live streaming to Blackberry and iPhone devices. "We’re at a place now where I think the ambition of our programming and our technology are lining up,” said WEEI.com VP & GM Tim Murphy. "We see this as a major step of what an online sports page is in a major market. Radio stations, I think, have a major opportunity in this landscape in that they can be very flexible while still offering a great deal of immersive, multimedia content." Verizon FiOS is signed on as the launch sponsor for the effort, and Murphy said the vast majority of the station’s ad sales have been and will continue to be combined efforts in which audio and video pre-roll and display are bundled with terrestrial radio buys. The site drew more than 450,000 unique users in February, and Murphy is targeting more than 750,000 per month before the end of baseball season.
