VH1 President Tom Calderone said that he "wouldn't know for a month about just how much of Buffalo will be featured" on the net's new reality series, "Playing the Field," which stars newly-signed Bills WR Terrell Owens, according to Alan Pergament of the BUFFALO NEWS. Calderone: "It will be a backdrop. I don't know how much of Buffalo will be in it. This show is in a tailspin. It was going to be filmed in Dallas and Miami (where Owens lives) now it's Miami and Buffalo." Calderone added, "I talked to the producers over the weekend and they're ready to start setting up shop in Buffalo and ready to go." Pergament noted when the Cowboys cut Owens earlier this month, Calderone e-mailed the show's producers and said, "Let's follow this drama." Camera crews have been "following Owens for weeks," but Calderone "doesn't believe camera crews were with Owens on his flight to Buffalo on Saturday," when he was introduced to the local media. However, the camera crew "followed him the day before he signed and also caught his return home to Miami." The show is set to air on Monday nights beginning in July, ending the "first week of September before the Bills opener." Thus far, only the pilot episode centering around a charity event that Owens attended in Dallas has been completed (BUFFALONEWS.com, 3/11).
FITTING THE BILL: Bills Senior VP/Business Ventures Pete Guelli said Owens' signing has "certainly raised the profile of our brand." He said that the team has been in discussions with "national sponsors who are suddenly looking at the Bills in a new light." In addition, Guelli this week will travel to Toronto to "meet with Canadian sponsors, whose [interest] piqued up after the Owens signing." Guelli: "The team made a football decision that is definitely helping us on the marketing side. This is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/11).
THEY CAN PLAY: In Dallas, Barry Horn reports the the 12 individuals introduced yesterday as contestants on Pro Football HOFer Michael Irvin's reality show "4th and Long" are "hardcore football players whose most recent experience has been in college, in the [AFL] or semi-pro football." Former coach Joe Avezzano, who is serving as a coach on the show, said, "The bottom line is that we have to deliver someone to the Cowboys who can play" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 3/12).
