NGB Leaders Seek More Information Regarding Scherr's Ouster

The leaders of some U.S. national governing bodies (NGBs) "have sought more information" regarding the decision for Jim Scherr to step down as USOC CEO and for USOC BOD member Stephanie Streeter to replace him as interim CEO, according to A.J. Perez of USA TODAY. USA Wrestling President Jim Ravannack even "has called for Scherr's reinstatement," and he said that "congressional hearings should be convened to investigate leadership change." But USOC VP/Int'l Relations Bob Ctrvrtlik said that Scherr was supplanted because the BOD "had 'a difference in visions' and the change had been discussed since the Beijing Olympics ended in August." Ctvrtlik: "This was definitely not a rash decision as some people are trying to portray it." Ctvrtlik added that Streeter "did not lobby for the position." Streeter: "People always react in interesting ways to change. The organization has tremendous upside. We'll just move forward." Streeter added that "her role 'will not matter one way or the other' when it comes down to whether" Chicago is successful in its bid for the '16 Olympics (USA TODAY, 3/10).

NEXT STEPS: The AP's Eddie Pells reported NGB Council Chair and USA Triathlon Exec Dir Skip Gilbert is "scheduled to meet Thursday" with USOC Chair Larry Probst. USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny: "We're trying to get to a place where everyone understands what's going on." Pells noted the NGBs and Chicago 2016 officials are "concerned about Streeter's ascension to CEO from the volunteer board of directors -- whether it's legal and ethical for a board member who allegedly helped engineer the CEO's ouster to take his job." Streeter said that there was "no conflict of interest" (AP, 3/9). Meanwhile, the WALL STREET JOURNAL's Matthew Futterman reports Streeter will arrive at USOC HQs in Colorado Springs tomorrow, and her "first order of business" will be to end the "stalemate with the [IOC], which wants to cut the USOC's generous share of premium Olympic sponsorships and U.S. media rights for the Games" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 3/10).

BAD TIMING: In Boston, John Powers writes the timing "couldn't be worse for an abrupt change at the top" of the USOC, as the '10 Vancouver Games are "less than a year away, and Chicago's bid for the 2016 Games is at a critical point, with a presentation to the IOC executive board in Denver due later this month and a site visit from the evaluation commission in early April." When there is "instability and dysfunction at the top, as there was when Scherr took over in 2003, the family takes the hit." Streeter's "biggest challenge may be to convince the family -- including its IOC godfathers in Switzerland -- that the bad old days of petty infighting and revolving-door officials won't return" (BOSTON GLOBE, 3/10).
