Baker And Reds Extend Request For
Obama To Throw Ceremonial First Pitch
The Reds have "extended a request" for PRESIDENT OBAMA to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the June 20 White Sox-Reds Civil Rights Game at Great American Ball Park. Reds manager DUSTY BAKER has a "personal history with Obama dating back to his days in Chicago as manager of the Cubs." Baker "campaigned on Obama's behalf and attended his presidential inauguration in January" (MLB.com, 3/4).

HONOR ROLL: NCAA President MYLES BRAND will receive a Merit of Honor Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics on June 19 in Orlando. The award will be only the "sixth given in the group's 44-year history" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 3/5)....Penn State Univ. football coach JOE PATERNO and his wife, SUE, will be honored for their charitable contributions at the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association's (CMTA) second annual "Honor a Star. IN MEMORY: Manchester Guardian track & field correspondent JOHN RODDA, 78, who covered nine Olympic Games for the newspaper from '60-92, passed away Tuesday. Rodda had been a member of the IOC Press Commission, "on which he served for 18 years" (Manchester GUARDIAN, 3/4)....Nationals President STAN KASTEN learned yesterday morning that his mother, SYLVIA, "passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease" (WASHINGTON POST, 3/5).
