Cherry Taking Heat For Recent
Comments About European Players
The CBC's Don Cherry during Saturday night's "HNIC" telecast criticized the Red Wings for “playing boring hockey,” and “again laid the blame on Europeans.” The CBC's Ron MacLean suggested that it has “nothing to do with nationality but rather a lack of aggression,” but Cherry said, “Well, why do you think it’s not aggressive? Because it’s full of Europeans.” In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich writes, “Imagine, if you possibly can, a Fox announcer proclaiming that the Phillies won the World Series but they’re boring because the team is full of Dominicans. Imagine how much longer he’d have his job” (TORONTO STAR, 3/2).

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES: In St. Louis, Strauss & Hummel noted DirecTV "mistakenly blacked out the telecast" of Friday's Cardinals-Mets Spring Training game on MLB Network to "many of its subscribers in the St. Louis market." MLB Net Manager of Business PR Jeff Heckelman said that the telecast "would have been pre-empted had a St. Louis station also carried it, but that wasn't the case and the game should have been broadcast by DirecTV." Meanwhile, Charter Communications had "no such problem" with the broadcast (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 2/28)....Storm conditions at a Crawford Communications master control facility in Atlanta yesterday caused interruptions of FS Pittsburgh's signal during the Penguins-Stars game. DirecTV and cable providers Comcast and Armstrong all lost the signal "several times" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 3/2).

FLYING THE COUP: In DC, Tracee Hamilton reported the Washington Post “will not have a reporter covering the Orioles this season.” The paper has a “story-sharing arrangement with the Baltimore Sun” and can “use their coverage if we choose.” In addition, Hamilton noted the Post’s “baseball space has been cut.” While the Nationals will receive the same amount of coverage as in the past, the previously-separate AL and NL pages will be combined into one page (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 2/28).

FIRST CREW: The MLS Crew and ONN have reached a broadcast partnership to ensure that every regular-season Crew game will be carried on TV. ONN will broadcast 21 regular-season Crew games, and will introduce a new weekly show, “CrewXtra,” which will air each Wednesday during the MLS season at 8:00pm ET and 11:00pm (Crew).
