Wang Less Bullish On Lighthouse Project, Looking For Answers

Wang (r) Hoping For Decision On
Lighthouse Development This Summer
Islanders Owner Charles Wang Friday acknowledged that "his goal to begin construction on the Lighthouse Project this July might be unrealistic," according to Greg Logan of NEWSDAY. Wang said that the "time is nearing when he must make a decision on whether to continue pursuing his development plans," though he "stopped short of issuing any ultimatums to the Town of Hempstead regarding the approval process." Wang wants a "timely answer on how much" of the project, which includes a revamped Nassau Coliseum, the town will approve, and "even if the start of construction is delayed until next year, Wang is hoping for a decision" by this summer. Wang: "I don't want to have ultimatums. I have not done the ultimatums. ... But we've been jerked around on this for a little while now. OK, I'm committed to keeping it on Long Island. I want to keep it on Long Island. It belongs on Long Island. Let us build the damn thing" (NEWSDAY, 2/28).

STRANDED ON AN ISLAND? On Long Island, Mark Herrmann wrote Wang's legacy is "in the balance while the future of the Islanders is in limbo." Wang "surely will look much better if the Islanders stay here forever," but "either way, history must give him his due." Wang is "not like" former Dodgers Owner Walter O'Malley, who "shuffled the Dodgers out of Brooklyn to make a fortune" in L.A. At the "very least, the record will have to say this much about Wang: He tried." Herrmann: "Whether you like the Lighthouse concept or not ... and whether you agree with the way the team has been run since 2000, you have to give the guy credit for having hung in there." If the Islanders "ever do move, it won't be under cover of darkness, like the Baltimore Colts," and Wang "will have gone down blazing" (NEWSDAY, 3/1).
