Healed Up? NBA Bans Dwyane Wade's Slogan-Bearing Bandages

Heat Were Planning A Team Promo Around The
Bandages Before NBA Prohibited Them
The slogan-bearing bandages Heat G Dwyane Wade has been wearing beneath his injured left eye "have been banned by the NBA," according to Ira Winderman of the South Florida SUN-SENTINEL. NBA VP/Basketball Communications Tim Frank said, "A player can wear a Band-Aid for healthcare purposes, but it shouldn't have any name or indentifications on it." The NBA, which "limits promotional gear and requires conformity that extends beyond the basketball court, ... spoke to the Heat [Friday] about Wade's fashion statement." The team made Frank "aware of a team promotion centered on the adhesive strips," but Frank said, "We offered clarity to them." Frank said that the issue "never got far enough to be addressed in terms of sanctions." Frank: "You can't wear an identifiable Band-Aid. We don't expect it to be an issue, so there will be no need for a penalty" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 2/28). Heat coach Erik Spoelstra jokingly said of Wade wearing the bandages, "He has no tattoos so I figured this was his personal expression" (PALM BEACH POST, 2/28). Meanwhile, in Ft. Lauderdale, Sarah Talalay noted Florida-based Metro Signs Inc. is "responsible for the customized bandages, now known as 'Band-Wades.'" The company was planning to supply Heat "staff, arena employees, ticket takers and ushers with a decal version of the Band-Wades to wear" at Saturday's Knicks-Heat game at AmericanAirlines Center. A "three-pack of Wade, Heat and 3 -- Wade's jersey number -- Band-Wades will be offered at the arena's Miami Hoops Gear store and online." Metro Signs Owner Bruno Dede said that he is "working with Wade to sell adhesive bandages at dwyanewade.com with the proceeds going to Wade's foundation" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 2/28).
