Padres' Sandy Alderson Is Top Candidate For Pac-10 Commish Job

Alderson Is Top Candidate In
Search For Next Pac-10 Commish
The leading candidate for the Pac-10 Commissioner job is outgoing Padres CEO Sandy Alderson, who is expected to leave the team around Opening Day, according to sources cited by Ourand & Smith of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. Sources indicated that NCAA Senior VP/Basketball & Business Strategies Greg Shaheen was an "early target" to replace outgoing Commissioner Tom Hansen, who will step down July 1, but Shaheen "turned down an offer from the conference in January." Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby, who is leading the selection process, said that a list of the leading candidates has been "given to the conference's CEO group, a collection of the 10 presidents and chancellors who will make the selection." Bowlsby was "thought to be a candidate himself," but last week said that he is "not up for the job." Ourand & Smith report D'Backs President & CEO Derrick Hall and Red Sox COO Mike Dee both "went through preliminary interviews but are no longer considered candidates for the job." The Pac-10 could name Hansen's successor by the end of March (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 3/2 issue).

CHICAGO STYLE: In Chicago, Paul Sullivan reports Alderson “may be in line” for a position with the Cubs similar to his current role with the Padres once prospective Owner Tom Ricketts takes control of the team. Alderson “declined to comment when asked if he'd be interested in running the Cubs if Ricketts buys the team” (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/2).
