Andy Murray Willing To Renegotiate Terms Of RBS Sponsorship

Murray Wants To Help Struggling RBS In Return
For Supporting Him Through Junior Career
ATP World Tour player Andy Murray is "willing to renegotiate the terms of his sponsorship deal with the Royal Bank of Scotland [RBS] in a bid to 'help' the ailing bank," according to Stuart Bathgate of THE SCOTSMAN. RBS recently posted losses of US$40.6B and had to be "bailed out by the government," and Murray has indicated that he is "willing to discuss a cut in his sponsorship." Murray has "enjoyed a relationship with RBS since the age of 13," and under his current deal he is "contracted to wear the company's logo on his sleeve." Murray: "The bank kindly supported me when I was going through the difficult transition from the juniors to the seniors. Now I want to try and help them." He added he will "speak to the people at RBS about the best way forward and we will work something out." Bathgate noted RBS also sponsors golfers including Luke Donald and Paula Creamer (THE SCOTSMAN, 2/23).

DRIVING ALONE: In London, Matt Sandy reports former F1 driver Sir Jackie Stewart is being criticized for "refusing to give up his [US$5.8M] role as a global ambassador" for RBS. Stewart said, "I am sorry these people are losing their jobs, but I signed a contract and I have done my bit. I have two more years to run. I work all over the world for them. I am out there, creating business." Stewart added that he "would be tabling proposals for a new deal shortly but refused to confirm if he would accept a pay cut." Stewart: "I definitely want to help the recovery of RBS and will be proposing a plan that is better for both the bank and for me" (London DAILY MAIL, 2/24).
