CSN Profiles Leonsis' Ownership Of Capitals, Other Ventures

CSN Mid-Atlantic Profiles
Leonsis On "My Life 365"
CSN Mid-Atlantic last night featured Capitals Owner TED LEONSIS in the show, "My Life 365: Ted Leonsis," and chronicled his various business endeavors, including his ownership of the Capitals. Leonsis said, "The role that I would like to play is that I’ve taken a team and given it back to the fans. … Fans have the right to be very demanding of ownership. We are in this together." Leonsis added, "I do believe in this collective wisdom of crowds and the medium is such, speaking of the Internet, that you can process a lot of information very efficiently by listening to fans, reading blogs, going on the message boards." Capitals investor JACK DAVIES said Leonsis has "made his career out of being on the cutting-edge." Davies: "He continues to be a pioneer in terms of the investments he’s making in a lot of cutting-edge, new media and high-tech companies." But Leonsis noted he "won't do anything anymore that's just about business." Leonsis said he will "only get involved with businesses that I think can do well by doing good” in the community. Leonsis, who in '04 started a film production company called Agape, said, "You can write checks and you can give to charities, but I just felt that using film to create a new category of what I call ‘filmanthropy,’ using the medium to activate volunteerism and discussion and trying to right a wrong."

LOOKING BACK: Leonsis said when he acquired the Capitals in '99, there was "no book to read, there’s no ‘Professional Team Ownership For Dummies’ book, and I probably wasn’t as humble as I should have been.” Leonsis: "You buy a team and you think it looks easy. You’ve been a fan, you think you know the game." Davies said Leonsis is "clearly the most accessible owner in the (NHL), if not in all of sports" ("My Life 365: Ted Leonsis," CSN Mid-Atlantic, 2/18).
