Naming Rights Deal For Cowboys New Stadium Still Uncertain

Cowboys May Open New Stadium
With Temporary Name
When the Cowboys play their first game in their new stadium in Arlington later this year, Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones "might have a temporary name for his stadium and a lot less cash than he expected," according to a front-page piece by Jeff Mosier of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. AT&T has long been "rumored to be interested in the stadium's naming rights," but company officials said that they have "not signed a deal with the Cowboys." L.A.-based Premier Partnerships Regional VP John Alper said that he "could see the Cowboys breaking" the $400M mark the Mets and Nets got from Citigroup and Barclays, respectively, for entitlement to their new venues, but "only with a 30- or 40-year deal." Maryland-based Team Services LLC Principal E.J. Narcise said, "There are probably a lot of folks out there who could handle or would choose to handle the Cowboys' price tag." But Narcise said that the "one big advantage for Citigroup and Barclays Capital -- the name sponsors for the new homes for the Mets and Nets respectively -- was that the companies also were major financers of those projects." Mosier noted the Cowboys do have "other major sponsorship deals in place," including a 12-year deal with Miller that "could be worth $96[M]" and a 10-year deal with Bank of America worth around $40M (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 2/16). ESPN's Suzy Kolber said of the lack of naming rights, "Even the optimistic are saying that a blockbuster deal is probably off the table in this year of economic turmoil” (“NFL Live,” ESPN, 2/16). Meanwhile, in Dallas, Tim MacMahon noted speculation has Jones planning to "spend lavishly to fill the holes in the roster with talented free agents" during the uncapped '10 NFL season. MacMahon: "Can Jerry afford to do so if he doesn't have millions of dollars from a naming rights sponsor to spend?" (DALLASNEWS.com, 2/16).

SAFETY FIRST: Arlington officials indicated that the Cowboys have "agreed to pay for the level of public safety staffing that Arlington believes is necessary at games and other events" at the team's new stadium after about a year of negotiations. In Ft. Worth, Susan Schrock reported as part of the agreement, the Cowboys "will pay for at least 34 fire and rescue personnel, 260 police personnel and a number of city-employed traffic management personnel to help with security and traffic during events." The team also "will pay public safety personnel at 1 1/2 times their normal hourly pay." Meanwhile, Arlington Assistant Fire Chief Don Crowson said that a similar agreement has "yet to be negotiated" with the MLB Rangers (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 2/14).
