MLB Franchise Notes: Time For The Nationals To Improve On Field

Dunn's Two-Year, $20M Deal With Nationals
Marks Team's Largest-Ever Player Contract
In DC, Mark Zuckerman writes the fact the Nationals, entering their fifth season in DC, "merely exist no longer qualifies as reason for fans to get excited." On-field success "now is a prerequisite, and the organization knows it." Nationals President Stan Kasten: "Fans need to see it, but no one needs to see it more than I do or our owners do. We got in this to win, and we want to win as soon as we possibly can." The team Thursday formally introduced LF Adam Dunn after he signed a two-year, $20M deal, the largest contract in franchise history. While the signing "made baseball sense," it also "made sense from a public-relations standpoint." The Nationals "needed to show their fans they weren't going to sit idly by all winter and do little of consequence to improve their roster" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 2/13). In DC, Thomas Boswell writes by signing Dunn, Nationals Owners the Lerners "aren't off the hook." But the deal is "far more than a start. It's a statement" (WASHINGTON POST, 2/13).

ALL ABOARD! The Brewers have reached a deal with Amtrak to provide "free rides on the Hiawatha train to Chicago" for Brewers fans attending the September 17 game against the Cubs. Beginning February 20, the first 100 fans who bring their ticket to the Miller Park box office will receive a "voucher for a free roundtrip ride" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 2/12). In addition, the team will provide the next 1,500 fans who bring their ticket to the box office with a "Miller Park South" T-shirt (JSONLINE.com, 2/12).

BIRD WATCHING: Orioles President of Baseball Operations Andy MacPhail said of speculation that he might be in contention to replace MLB Commissioner Bud Selig at the end of his tenure, "I do know one thing about myself -- the job that is important to me is the job that I have now. ... I am sort of limited in my attention span that I just get focused on doing what I'm doing now. I'm having fun. I like the people I'm working for, and I like the people I'm working with" (Baltimore SUN, 2/13).

WELCOME TO THE CLUBHOUSE: SI.com's Jon Heyman noted "everything you hear is very positive" about new Cubs Owner Tom Ricketts, who at 43 years old will become MLB's youngest Managing General Partner. Heyman also wrote it is good to get Tribune Co. Chair Sam Zell "out of the sport before he tries to run the Cubs like his struggling newspapers, which are almost all a lot worse since he took over" (SI.com, 2/12).
