DC United Wants To Build 24,000-Seat Venue,
Would Pay 25% Of Stadium's Cost |
MLS DC United co-Exec Chair Victor MacFarlane Thursday said that he is "committed to moving" the team to Prince George's County, Maryland, according to Helderman & Nakamura of the WASHINGTON POST. MacFarlane met with Maryland State Sens. and said that the club wants to build a 24,000-seat stadium in the county that would be the "center of a mixed-use development project." MacFarlane said that the team, which has played at RFK Stadium since joining MLS in '96, would pay 25% of the new venue's estimated $180-195M cost. The remainder of the stadium cost would be "financed by tax revenue generated at the stadium." MacFarlane told the state officials Thursday that the team is "looking at three sites for the stadium in the county," but a DC United spokesperson after the meeting said that "seven sites are under consideration." MacFarlane previously has threatened to move out of DC and "had been in talks with leaders in Prince George's for months." His "commitment to a move follows the withdrawal of the D.C. government's development partner from the deal at Poplar Point, which had been MacFarlane's favored" location for a new stadium (WASHINGTON POST, 2/13). In DC, Tim Lemke reports Maryland, Prince George's County and DC United officials Monday are scheduled to announce details of the plan, "which would have the support of the Maryland Stadium Authority" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 2/13).
