Cowboys May Never Land Big Naming-Rights Deal For New Stadium

Economic Climate Has Thwarted Cowboys
Attempt To Secure Big Naming-Rights Deal
Some experts said that a "big naming rights deal may never be done" for the new Cowboys stadium, leaving team Owner Jerry Jones "scrambling for a name -- and the extra revenue it would bring," according to Brett Shipp of WFAA.com. Citigroup currently is paying $400M for their 20-year naming-rights deal for the Mets' new ballpark, and this time last year, it was "rumored that AT&T might be willing to pay even more" for the Cowboys stadium. But times "have changed and so have expectations." When the economy "fizzled, so did the speculation." New York Univ. Professor of Sports Management Robert Boland said that the "pool of potential suitors appears to have dried up." Boland: "It's very conceivable [Jones] won't get a naming rights deal at this point. There may not be anything on the table that's big enough to be worthwhile to him." Former Stars and MLB Rangers President Mike Cramer said, "One of the things you want to sell to a naming rights partner is a lot of the hype and hoopla as you progress to open that stadium. No one is getting that with Jones' new stadium, and that's real important." Boland said, "It is the most expensive stadium that one team has taken on in all of human history. I think right now that Jerry Jones is going to be left with a portion of a billion-dollar mortgage" (WFAA.com, 2/5).
