Virginia's Loudoun County Inks Corporate Deal With Redskins

The Loudoun County (VA) Board of Supervisors has approved an agreement "declaring the county the 'Corporate Home of the Washington Redskins' and said it supported the idea" of building Redskins HOF in the county, according to Tim Lemke of the WASHINGTON TIMES. The board voted 5-3, with one abstention, to pay $250,000 over two years for the marketing partnership, which "would be designed to leverage the Redskins' presence in the Virginia county to promote business and tourism." Through the deal, the county "earns the right to use the Redskins logo on its Web site and promotional materials, while Loudoun County would be referenced on the team's Web site and communications with fans and business partners." The Redskins' practice facilities and offices are located in Ashburn, Virginia, which is located in Loudoun County. Money for the partnership "would come from existing taxes on hotels, campgrounds and rented guests rooms." Lemke notes supervisors voted 7-2 in favor of the HOF proposal, though the resolution "does not specify who would pay for the [HOF] but instead calls for the county to encourage private investment" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 2/4). Loudoun County Supervisor Lori Waters stressed the plan to pursue a Redskins HOF was "in no way a binding agreement." But Waters said that "given neighboring jurisdictions' interest in the Redskins, Loudoun needed to 'stake our ground as the corporate home of the Redskins'" (WASHINGTON EXAMINER, 2/4).

NOT EVERYONE ON BOARD: Despite the vote, some Loudoun County officials "remained unimpressed" by the proposal. Supervisor Jim Burton said, "I think this is an ill-advised use of taxpayers' money. I don't think we will get anything out of it." Supervisor Sally Kurtz: "I'm seeing a branding (campaign) with no end and with no metrics to show if you have achieved what you set out to do. It is the branding of our county and I don't think that is appropriate" (LOUDOUN TIMES-MIRROR, 2/4).
