Panthers Owner Richardson's Heart Transplant Deemed A Success

Richardson (r) Undergoes Heart
Transplant Surgery During Super Bowl
NFL and Panthers officials said that Panthers Owner JERRY RICHARDSON's heart transplant at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte Sunday night "was successful," according to Karen Garloch of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. CMC doctors "declined to talk about their high-profile patient," and CMC officials "would not even confirm he was a patient." UNC School of Medicine heart transplant surgeon DR. BRETT SHERIDAN said that transplant patients "usually stay in the hospital two to four weeks," and normal recovery time "is three to six months" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 2/3). In Charlotte, Tom Sorensen notes preparatory work for Richardson's surgery "probably began about the time" Super Bowl XLIII did Sunday. The procedure commenced "a few minutes before" 8:00pm ET, and the transplant was not completed until about 1:00am (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 2/3). NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL said of Richardson, "I thought about him the entire game and the entire night." Goodell said that he stayed up "until 3a.m., slept for two hours, then received another update about Richardson at 5a.m." Goodell: "It brings new meaning to the word(s) 'Super Sunday' when you see a guy you respect so much and you admire so much -- Jerry Richardson -- and he's got a new heart this morning. Hopefully, that's going to solve the issue for him" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 2/3).
