Cards' SB Appearance Doesn't Give Phoenix Big Ratings Boost
For the Cardinals' first Super Bowl, Phoenix ranked only ninth among Nielsen metered markets for NBC's telecast of Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday night, behind such non-NFL markets as Norfolk, Richmond and Ft. Myers-Naples. The 47.5 local rating in Phoenix was barely up from the 47.0 for last year's Super Bowl on Fox. Predictably, Pittsburgh's 53.6 local Nielsen rating topped all markets, up over last year's 50.8 rating in the market for Giants-Patriots on Fox, but down from a 57.4 for Super Bowl XL in '06 on ABC, when the Steelers defeated the Seahawks for their fifth Lombardi trophy. Host market Tampa-St. Pete earned a 49.2 local rating, the highest for a Super Bowl host city since Detroit earned a 52.5 local rating in '06. The chart below lists local ratings from the Nielsen metered markets for Super Bowl XLIII on NBC, with comparisons to the previous two Super Bowls. Ratings for Louisville for the game are delayed due to inclement weather, and ratings for New Orleans from Super Bowl XLI in '07 are unavailable due to effects at the time from Hurricane Katrina (THE DAILY).
