Tampa Mayor Wants Another Super Bowl Bid Before Leaving Office

Tampa Receives Rave Reviews For
Staging Fourth Super Bowl
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio said that she "would like to see the city bid on another [Super Bowl] before she leaves office in 2011," according to Janet Zink of the ST. PETERSBURG TIMES. Iorio: "We're good at it. Why shouldn't we do something we're good at?" NFL Senior VP/PR Greg Aiello said Tampa, which had hosted Super Bowls in '84, '91 and '01, "did another outstanding job hosting the Super Bowl." Aiello added that he "expects the community will 'be a strong candidate' to host again." Officials "praised Tampa for being friendly, safe and -- this is a surprise -- compact." The "decision to bid again lies with" Buccaneers Owners the Glazer family, and they "would have to let the NFL know they want the game back." The next available game to host is Super Bowl XLVII in '13 (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 2/3). In St. Pete, Tom Jones notes Tampa received "rave reviews from around the country" for hosting Super Bowl XLIII. Sports Illustrated "now lists Tampa as the No. 3 Super Bowl site behind San Diego and Miami." Jones notes there is "talk that Tampa will go after the 2014 Super Bowl, and it's hard to imagine the city will not get it, not after last week's splendid showing" (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 2/3).

EVERYTHING'S BIGGER IN TEXAS: The DALLAS BUSINESS JOURNAL's Art Stricklin reports North Texas Super Bowl XLV host committee officials last week in Tampa "gave thousands of journalists one of their first looks at what to expect in two years" when Super Bowl XLV is held at the new Cowboys Stadium. The committee had a "large booth promoting the area's attributes." North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee VP & COO Tara Green said, "We're rookies in the Super Bowl hosting business, but we want to present a friendly, helpful face to the media here this week." North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee President & CEO Bill Lively and Chair Roger Staubach "spent time staffing the North Texas booth [last] week, and the mayors of Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington also were scheduled to spend some time in the area" (DALLAS BUSINESS JOURNAL, 1/30 issue).

STUDY SESSION: In Indianapolis, Brendan O'Shaughnessy reports Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard yesterday returned from the Super Bowl "convinced that Indianapolis will be able to handle hosting" Super Bowl XLVI in '12. Ballard: "Everything there is in our wheelhouse. It was good for me to see the big picture." Ballard and 13 other city officials and sports-event professionals traveled to Tampa to "get a firsthand look at a city staging its fourth Super Bowl." The trip "included meetings on topics such as security and traffic logistics for future host cities." Ballard said that Tampa is "nowhere near as concentrated as Downtown Indianapolis, where most of the hotels, sites and stadium are within easy walking distance." Ballard: "We're going to create a village atmosphere" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 2/3).
