Bare Necessities: Rugby Players Pose Nude For Powerade Campaign

Steve Borthwick Among Rugby Players
Posing Nude For Powerade Campaign
England rugby players Paul Sackey and Steve Borthwick and Wales rugby player Shane Williams have "bared all for a risqué new advertising campaign" for Powerade, according to Matthew Moore of the London TELEGRAPH. The campaign, which features the players in a "series of photos showing them in on-field poses," will run during the European Rugby Union's RBS Six Nations Championship over the next two months. Powerade last year had U.K. Olympians cyclist Rebecca Romero, track and field athlete Phillips Idowu and swimmer Gregor Tait "pose nude for a similar campaign" (London TELEGRAPH, 1/26). In London, Ian Stafford reported the campaign, via Mother, London, contains the message that sports "needs an 'inner gear' as well as outer clothing." Borthwick said, "After seeing the photograph, I don't think I have a future as a nude model" (London DAILY MAIL, 1/25).
