NFL Sees Decline In Super Bowl Media Credential Requests

Number Of Specific Credential Requests
Down Almost 200 From Super Bowl XLII
The number of media credentials issued for Super Bowl XLIII is "down for the first time in recent memory," as the NFL said that there "were simply fewer requests," according to Joe Strupp of EDITOR & PUBLISHER. Though the 633 media outlets receiving credentials are the most ever and up from 576 for Super Bowl XLII, the "number of specific credentials requested dropped" from 4,786 for last year's game to 4,589 for Sunday's Cardinals-Steelers matchup. NFL Dir of Media Relations Michael Signora noted the number of requests still is the "second-greatest number in Super Bowl history." NFL officials said that they "did not keep records of credentials for all 42 previous Super Bowls, but believed this was the first time the credential demand has dropped." Strupp noted several newspapers that "regularly send numerous staffers to the game admitted they had cut back due to economics." The Atlanta Constitution and the Hartford Courant are "not sending any journalists to the game for the first time." Atlanta Constitution Pro Sports Editor Chris Vivlamore: "Financial considerations and without a (local) team in it, we decided not to go." Also, L.A. Times Sports Editor Randy Harvey said that the paper, which sent four staffers to last year's game in Glendale, is "sending only two this year," while Chicago Tribune Sports Editor Mike Kellams said that his paper, which sent four to the '08 Super Bowl, will send only three this season. The Dallas Morning News also is "down one, from five to four," and Sports Editor Garry Leavell said that he "might have cut staffing even further but wanted to have an extra writer there in case" former NFLer Bob Hayes, who played for the Cowboys, is chosen Saturday for induction into the Pro Football HOF. USA Today and the N.Y. Times said that their coverage will not change from last year's game. N.Y. Times Sports Editor Tom Jolly said that the paper has received 11 credentials for Sunday's game (EDITORANDPUBLISHER.com, 1/27).

WHAT'S THE FREQUENCY? SPORTS RADIO INTERVIEWS' Jimmy Shapiro wrote it is "shocking to see how dead it is" on Super Bowl Radio Row in Tampa. Shapiro, who is on radio row for his 11th Super Bowl, noted there "is no buzz here." Big radio stations from Boston, Chicago, S.F, Seattle, Cleveland and Houston have "no presence here whatsoever," while other stations from Atlanta, Miami, San Diego and Charlotte "are coming down later in the week." Shapiro noted the economy has "not only affected the number of stations down here, but it has also affected the number of companies willing to pay athletes to sponsor their brand and parade them on radio now" (SPORTSRADIOINTERVIEWS.com, 1/27). YAHOO SPORTS' Nick Friedell wrote radio row is a "shell of its former self" and may be only "half the size it once was." While it still is early in the week, "some people haven't even gotten into town yet." No matter "how busy it gets later this week, the atmosphere still won't come close to where it's been in years past." It is "simply a sign of the times," as the "sports media world is in shambles" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 1/27).
