Joe Maloof Says Winning Is Cure For Kings' Attendance Troubles

Joe Maloof (r) Says Winning Will Solve
Attendance Problems, Team Not For Sale
NBA Kings co-Owner Joe Maloof said improving the team's attendance at Arco Arena is "just a matter of ... winning again," according to a Q&A with the SACRAMENTO BEE's Ailene Voisin. Maloof said of the Kings hovering near the bottom of the NBA in home attendance this season, "The one thing I'm pleased with is that, while it's not easy getting people in the building, we're doing everything we can. We have new ticket plans. We have new packages." Maloof added, "I know Sacramento is really feeling the economy, and we need to get more fans in the building, but the bottom line is that we have to improve our team." When asked if he had "any thoughts of selling the franchise or adding investors," Maloof said, "No, no, we're not going to sell. We have a good ownership group." Maloof: "I know there's a lot of negativism toward the owners, toward us, toward the team for not winning. But that's just part of it, part of being in the NBA. You have to take the criticism. For the organization, for the city, for the players, the worse thing is apathy." Maloof added his double knee replacement surgery in September is why he "stopped going to Kings games." Maloof: "I went to a couple early in the season and sat in the suite, but it was just too exhausting. So that's where I've been. When people say, 'Where's Joe?' I've been there in spirit" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 1/27).

BIG SUPPORT, LITTLE CITY: The SACRAMENTO BEE's Voisin reported Maloof "completely agreed" with Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie's "suggestion that the Kings would benefit at some point from purchasing" the D-League Reno Bighorns, the Kings' affiliate. Maloof "embraced the concept of a developmental league as a vehicle to oversee the progress of" developing Kings players. Maloof: "Yes, yes, we would look at buying them. I've seen what it's done for [Kings F Donte Greene]. He's been up and down there, but he's getting training, teaching, an opportunity to get big minutes. ... I think it would be very good for us to have complete control over them (Bighorns) at some point" (SACBEE.com, 1/26).
