Chargers Hire Wasserman Media Group To Market Team In L.A.

About 30% Of Chargers Luxury Suites, Seats
Purchased By L.A. Residents And Companies
The Chargers have hired Wasserman Media Group (WMG) to market the team in L.A. and Orange County, a "development that could be viewed as an initial step toward an ultimate relocation," according to Sam Farmer of the L.A. TIMES. Chargers Special Counsel Mark Fabiani said L.A. and Orange County are "two of the most lucrative markets in the world." Fabiani: "There's no NFL team in those markets, and there's no reason the Chargers can't pursue those areas in these difficult economic times." Farmer notes about 30% of the Chargers' luxury suites and club seats are "purchased by individuals and companies in L.A. and Orange County" (L.A. TIMES, 1/27). In San Diego, Ronald Powell reports WMG will be charged with finding companies "willing to purchase pricey luxury suites and club seats, as well as to sign sponsorship deals for Qualcomm Stadium advertising." Fabiani asserted the partnership "has nothing whatsoever to do with the team staying or going. Fans shouldn't be more concerned than they already were." San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said that the deal is "no cause for concern and could benefit the city." Sanders: "They're going after corporate donors because they need to fill those boxes" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/27).

L.A. ALIVE: The L.A. TIMES' Farmer writes, "Possible motivations aside, this much is clear: The Chargers, who have been working on a San Diego stadium solution for seven years and so far have been unsuccessful, are better positioned to move than any other NFL team." The "latest option" for the team's possible relocation is Majestic Realty Chair & CEO Ed Roski's planned stadium in City of Industry, California, which "should have all of its approvals in place by this spring and then will receive the go-ahead from the NFL to formally approach potential tenants." Farmer notes NFL owners at their annual meetings in Laguna Beach in March could discuss the "concept of L.A.'s playing host" to Super Bowl L, the event's 50th anniversary, in '16 (L.A. TIMES, 1/27). Farmer said, "If I was handicapping the teams right now I would put San Diego far and above all the rest of the teams as the team that could move to L.A. San Diego is free to leave San Diego right now without the threat of law suits. So that’s one to watch, but it’s got to be the right stadium situation" ("The Jim Rome Show," 1/26).

NOT HEADING TO THE 619: In San Diego, Nick Canepa notes the NFL has said that it has "no plans to hold another Super Bowl" at Qualcomm Stadium, which last hosted a Super Bowl in '03. NFL Senior VP/PR Greg Aiello: "It's difficult to imagine with all the new stadiums around the league competing to hold Super Bowls that the ownership would support anything other than cities with those newer facilities" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/27).
