Delays Forcing Red Bull Arena
To Open After '09 MLS Season |
The opening of the MLS Red Bulls' new stadium is "delayed again," according to Stefan Bondy of the North Jersey HERALD NEWS. Red Bulls Managing Dir Erik Stover in an e-mail Thursday informed season ticket holders "due to a number of obstacles that have led to delays, Red Bull Arena will not open until after the 2009 season." The stadium had been slated to open during the '09 MLS season, but a source said that the Red Bulls "were locked in lengthy bureaucratic battles with Harrison Township (NJ) over planning board amendments and the surrounding infrastructure, among other things." The source said that Red Bull Arena "still could be ready by November," but "after the MLS season." Bondy noted the "latest delay pushes back the proposed construction of a training facility" in Hanover, New Jersey, and Stover said that the team "will continue to train at" Montclair State Univ. (North Jersey HERALD NEWS, 1/24). Stover said of delaying the opening of Red Bull Arena, "The best decision for us is to prepare for the 2010 season. Our goal has always been to create a first-class experience for our fans. Opening before we are 100[%] ready would do a disservice to our fans that have waited for our new stadium." Sources said that "multiple issues led to delays in construction and development, from government red tape to delays in the development of the area" around the arena. But ESPN.com's Ives Galarcep noted the bonds that "needed to be sold to build the parking deck next to Red Bull Arena have been sold, clearing the way for that project to commence" (ESPN.com, 1/23).
