Steelers Prospered Despite Turbulent Ownership Situation

Steelers Players Handled On-The-Field Business
While Rooneys Negotiated Ownership Restructuring
The Steelers will play in Sunday's Super Bowl XLIII despite a season in which Chair Dan Rooney and President Art Rooney II sought to consolidate ownership of the franchise, as the team "accepted the challenge [Dan] Rooney gave them: Don't worry about this, we will," according to the AP's Alan Robinson, who wrote under the header, "Amid Ownership Talks, Rooney Stabilized Team." Steelers DE Brett Keisel: "They did a wonderful job of not letting it become a distraction, because it was a big deal." Steelers S Troy Polamalu said Dan Rooney told the team there was a "situation going on with the ownership right now but ... if we win, it will take care of everything." Polamalu: "And you know everything's happened the way he predicted." NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said of the Rooney family, "They've run a model franchise. I think everyone in Pittsburgh recognizes how proud they are of the Steelers. We in the NFL recognize how fortunate we've been to have Dan Rooney's leadership and now Art's leadership" (AP, 1/24).

MIXED EMOTIONS: In Pittsburgh, Scott Brown noted the sale of the team "put a strain" on the Rooney brothers, as Dan and Art have agreed to purchase the shares of Dan's four brothers, and there will be "mixed feelings when a deal is finalized." Dan Rooney said of the ownership restructuring, "There were times when you figured, 'Hey, is this going to be insurmountable?' We didn't deviate, so it worked out." Brown noted the Steelers "have long been a thread that has held the Rooneys together," but what "may have weighed most heavily on the four brothers as they pondered selling to [Duquesne Capital Management Chair Stanley Druckenmiller] is how synonymous the Rooneys have become with the Steelers and vice versa." Steelers investor Art Rooney Jr. said, "The organization was so connected with the Rooney family that it was almost like ... I've never been divorced or anything, but it was not a happy time." Brown wrote a Steelers win in Super Bowl XLIII "actually could hasten the process that will significantly alter the ownership structure of the franchise," as Dan Rooney is "working to add more investors to the three he announced had joined him" in December. The profile and appeal of the team "would never be higher if they become the first NFL team to win six Super Bowls" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 1/25).

Michael Bidwill Revived Cardinals,
Revamping Outdated Practices
RAY OF SONLIGHT: In Arizona, Scott Bordow wrote the NFL Cardinals are in the Super Bowl in part because President Michael Bidwill "gave the organization exactly what it needed: a good, swift kick in the butt." While Owner Bill Bidwill is a "gentle breeze, never blowing too hard or too hot," Michael is a "tornado, hell-bent on getting his way and if he leaves a path of destruction behind, so be it." Cardinals GM Rod Graves said of Michael Bidwill, "We're living his vision. He was the agent of change." Bordow noted when Bidwill in '02 was named President and took over day-to-day operations, the Cardinals "were still doing business as if it was 1952." But Michael "immediately set out to change their outdated ways," and one of the first things he did was to "visit other NFL franchises to find out why they were successful." When he returned to the Cardinals, he "understood just how much work was needed" (EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE, 1/24).
