NFL Franchise Notes: Browns Cut At Least 15 Jobs Due To Economy

In Cleveland, Mary Kay Cabot cites a source as saying that the Browns have "laid off 15 people in the past two days," including Dir of Media Information Ken Mather and Dir of Team Operations Brendan Rowe. Browns President Mike Keenan in an e-mail said of the layoffs, "We are not immune to the current economic climate and in order to ensure that our business operated in an honest, efficient and realistic manner, we were faced with extremely difficult decisions." The source indicated that by the "time the Browns are done with their layoffs, it could be as many as 40 people," which would represent about 25% of their employees (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 1/22).

LOST AT SEA: In Oakland, Monte Poole writes from the "one-man process of interviewing coaching prospects to the inordinate level of energy used to spin those interviews to the plodding pace of the process itself, it appears the Raiders will maintain their status as one of the most ineffectual franchises in sports, largely because owner Al Davis is so unfailingly loyal to a general manager clearly past his prime. A GM named, um, Al Davis." Davis "sticks to the same old plan, each time believing it will produce a better result." Poole: "Is that not a definition of insanity?" (OAKLAND TRIBUNE, 1/22).

PRIDE OF ST. LOUIS: In St. Louis, Jeff Gordon reported Rams co-Owner Chip Rosenbloom has "regained credibility with Rams fans," who "applauded the franchise's head-coaching hire" of Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Rosenbloom took over control of the team in January '08 following the death of his mother, late Rams Owner Georgia Frontiere, and his first year "couldn't have gone much worse." But Rosenbloom "heads into Year 2 with a new management team." Nobody "knows how much longer his group will own the team -- but people do know that Chip is trying to run the franchise the right way" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 1/20).
