Votes On New Marlins Ballpark
Pushed Back Until February |
A package of votes by Miami City Commissioners and Miami-Dade County Commissioners that "could lead to a new baseball stadium" for the Marlins and that were originally scheduled for Thursday, have been "pushed back until next month," according to Charles Rabin of the MIAMI HERALD. Though both the city and county "endorsed the new stadium in late 2007, they still must finalize key managerial, construction and other contracts before the project can begin." County Commission Chair Dennis Moss said that he "won't place a ballpark item on the agenda unless his colleagues have two weeks for a review -- a contrast to the earlier, quick votes that created the funding mechanism for a host of projects that included the stadium." County and city commissioners as of yesterday "had not seen details of the five contracts to be finalized." Rabin notes the holidays, "as well as the absence of many elected officials" who are attending today's presidential inauguration, "factored in the delay in the final votes." Passage of the contracts "is not guaranteed, as a two-thirds majority of county commissioners must approve the construction and management agreements." The two-thirds majority is required because the Marlins "hired contractors without going through a county bid process, triggering the necessary super majority vote" (MIAMI HERALD, 1/20).
