Red Sox To Break New TV Spot Sunday As Part Of Buildup For '09

Newest Red Sox John Smoltz
To Be Featured In TV Spot
The Red Sox are "planning to launch a TV advertising campaign that will debut during local broadcasts Sunday" of the AFC and NFC Championship games, according to Chris Reidy of the BOSTON GLOBE. A Red Sox spokesperson in an e-mail wrote that a TV ad titled "Can't Wait" is "designed to promote ticket sales for the team's upcoming 2009 regular season." The spokesperson added that the ad will feature newly-acquired P John Smoltz, Baseball HOFer Jim Rice, manager Terry Francona, SS Jed Lowrie and team mascot Wally. The team added that the campaign, via the Red Sox marketing department and Conover Tuttle Pace, Boston, "also features TV and radio ads that will air primarily during local news as well as during Boston Celtics games and local telecasts of Good Morning America and the Today Show." Reidy noted "Can't Wait" is "part of a larger Sox marketing effort called the Road Trip, which recognizes that the team has to engage in aggressive marketing if it wants to keep Fenway Park full during tough economic times like these." Red Sox Exec VP and Chief Sales & Marketing Officer Sam Kennedy, "alluding to the recession," said, "We didn't want to sit here this off-season and just expect fans to buy tickets the way they have done in the past" (BOSTON.com, 1/15).

John Henry Says He Never Liked Sox'
Chances In Teixeira Negotiations
PUT A CAP ON IT: In a special to BOSTON.com, Red Sox Owner John Henry sat for a Q&A with NESN's Tom Caron and said a salary cap "would certainly be great for competitive balance within baseball." Henry added of 1B Mark Teixeira signing with the Yankees, "This was another typical negotiation with Scott Boras. The Yankees were going to get the last call. We felt that was going to be the case from the beginning and didn't like our chances -- particularly after hearing from the player that Boston was not his preference and (from) the agent that we were the low bidder among clubs." When asked how the economy will affect MLB, Henry said, "There will be an effect. No one will escape this Great Unwinding. The Red Sox, our fans and MLB as a whole will be impacted" (BOSTON.com, 1/15).

SPRING FEVER: In Ft. Myers, Glenn Miller reports a panel of Lee County (FL) and Red Sox officials Thursday recommended Ft. Myers-based Parker/Mudgett/Smith and HOK Sport to design the team's new Spring Training facility in the city, set to open in '12. The recommendation will go to the Lee County Commission for approval. HOK also designed the City of Palms Park, the team's Spring Training facility since '93 (FT. MYERS NEWS-PRESS, 1/16). In addition, Lee County has selected Naples-based Kraft Construction to oversee construction of the new Spring Training complex. In Naples, Charlie Whitehead reported Kraft, which will team with Florida-based Casey Construction and Chris-Tel Construction on the facility, has "limited ballpark experience, but a controlling interest in the company was purchased earlier this year" by Oklahoma-based Manhattan Construction, which has been involved in the construction of several sports venues, including the new Cowboys stadium and the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington (NAPLES NEWS, 1/15).
