Three Years At Notre Dame |
Entergy New Orleans Inc. President & CEO Rod West yesterday confirmed that he is under consideration for the NFLPA Exec Dir position, and said that while he "wasn't seeking the position, he is honored and plans to have 'an honest conversation' with the firm handling the search," according to Rebecca Mowbray in a front-page piece for the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE. West is a "rising star at the city utility," and many believe that he is "being groomed for top jobs at Entergy Corp., the city's only Fortune 500 company." While West did not make the NFL as a player, he did play football for the Univ. of Notre Dame and "those who know West say his background is well-suited for the job." West earlier in his career worked for law firm Jones Walker as an employment and labor attorney, and from '93-'01 taught law classes and a "course on the business and legal aspects of sports" at Tulane Univ. With a law degree and an MBA, West is "well-versed in the worlds of business and contracts." NFLPA Communications Coordinator Joanna Comfort said that the union had no comment on West or the search to replace late NFLPA Exec Dir Gene Upshaw (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 1/14). West in a statement Monday said that he has "no plans to leave Entergy, but that he will stay in the interview process" (WWLTV.com, 1/12).
WATCHDOG: U.S. Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY), who joined three other U.S. Reps in asking the Department of Labor to monitor the NFLPA search, said, "I'm concerned about fairness. The election to replace Gene Upshaw is important, and we want to make certain that the process is fair and open." NFLPA interim Exec Dir Richard Berthelsen yesterday, in response to the request, said that the union had "provided the lawmakers with a chronology of the search process and a schedule for the coming months." Berthelsen: "There's nothing about how this search was conducted that could cause anyone to be concerned about its transparency or legality" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/14).
