U.S. Reps Ask Congress To Monitor NFLPA Exec Dir Search

U.S. Reps G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Edolphus Towns (D-NY) and Bobby Rush (D-IL) in a January 8 letter asked the Department of Labor to monitor the NFLPA's search for a new Exec Dir, according to Rob Maaddi of the AP. The reps also asked that a "'detailed disclosure and description report' of the search be provided to the group and the labor department." The four in the letter, which was addressed to Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, said, "We would like to ensure the integrity of the search process and that the process is transparent, fair and compliant with all applicable Department of Labor rules and regulations, and the NFLPA Constitution rules and by-laws" (AP, 1/12).

PLAYERS' CLUB: PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Mike Florio reported there is a "storm brewing between the current leadership" of the NFLPA and agents who "don't have a strike fund to guard against the disappearance of paychecks from which they receive" up to 3% as their commission. An NFL source said that some agents are "beginning to prod their clients to ask tough questions about the perception" that NFLPA interim Exec Dir Richard Berthelsen and outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler want a former NFLer to assume the permanent duty as NFLPA Exec Dir. The agents believe that while "simply having playing experience might have been sufficient" when late NFLPA Exec Dir Gene Upshaw assumed the role in '83, the job now is "much bigger and more challenging." The NFL source indicated that there is "suspicion that Berthelsen and Kessler prefer a former player who then can be guided (or, as the case may be, manipulated) into carrying out the agenda set by Berthelsen and Kessler" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 1/12).
