People & Personalities: MLB Rangers Name Barnett To Radio Team

MLB Rangers Tap Barnett To Partner
With Eric Nadel On Radio Broadcasts
The MLB Rangers Friday agreed to a multi-year deal with Dave Barnett to serve as the club's radio play-by-play voice. Barnett will partner with announcer Eric Nadel on all Rangers radio broadcasts on team's flagship station KRLD-AM (Rangers). In Dallas, Barry Horn noted Barnett, who broadcast games for the team in '90, replaces Victor Rojas, who joined MLB Network. Barnett "will assume all of Rojas' duties," including replacing announcer Josh Lewin "on the TV side when necessary." He also will "continue to work college football and basketball for ESPN" at the conclusion of the Rangers season (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 1/10).

HERE TO STAY: In Boston, Renee Nadeau notes Patriots radio announcer Gil Santos "will retire at the end of the month from his longtime post" as WBZ-AM's morning sports anchor, but Santos said that his retirement "will not extend to the Patriots radio booth." Santos: "I will be back again next season and for the foreseeable future." Santos served as the team's radio announcer from '66-79 before serving again from '91 to the present (BOSTON HERALD, 1/11).

SINGING A NEW TUNE? The GLOBE & MAIL's William Houston wonders in the wake of the recent death of amateur hockey player Don Sanderson following an on-ice fight if the CBC's Don Cherry is "softening his position" on fighting. Cherry during Saturday's "Hockey Night in Canada" said, "I never believed in having a mad dog sit on the bench and have two or three shifts, and go out there and fight. That's not hockey." Cherry added of the "safety issue in fighting," "We don't need protection. If two guys want to go, that's it." Houston notes the CBC's Ron MacLean "agreed" with Cherry. MacLean: "If you're worried about safety, you'd have to cancel a million sports" (GLOBE & MAIL, 1/12).

NEW APPROACH: CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS' Ed Sherman wrote "Monsters In The Morning," which airs live weekdays from 6:00-9:00am CT on CSN Chicago and debuted this morning, "promises not only a potentially groundbreaking new format but a new business model, one in which [host Mike] North serves as not just highly paid on-air talent but also as a partner in the show -- and as chief sales rep." The show is "billed as a local sports-oriented version of the 'Today Show.'" CSN Chicago President Jim Corno said that the talk radio format is a format that "hasn't been tried on a local cable sports channel" (CHICAGOBUSINESS.com, 1/10).
