Charity Stripe: Red Sox GM Theo Epstein Holds Annual Event
In Boston, Adam Kilgore reported Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia, P Justin Masterson, GM Theo Epstein and Manager Terry Francona, ESPN's Peter Gammons, Rays CF Fernando Perez and Yankees P CC Sabathia participated in a roundtable discussion Saturday at Fenway Park in conjunction with the "Hot Stove, Cool Music" concert. The event "raised money for The Foundation To Be Named Later, which Epstein runs with his twin brother, Paul, and included a live auction run by comedian Mike O'Malley." The "most interesting auction items: three cribbage boards signed by Pedroia and Francona, which went for $2,000 apiece." Francona and Pedroia "play each other in cribbage before each game" (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/11). Theo Epstein and Gammons were "part of their annual concert at the Paradise Rock Club" (MLB.com, 1/10).
PANTHER PRIDE: In Charlotte, Mark Price reported the NFL Panthers are the "latest group to open its wallet for the burgeoning Critical Need Response Fund -- pledging a buck a head for every fan in Bank of America Stadium" for Saturday night's Cardinals-Panthers NFC Divisional playoff game. With a "sellout guaranteed, that means $73,778 will be added to the campaign." The Critical Need Response Fund was created December 2 as an "emergency resource for charities that provide food, clothing and shelter to those in need" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/10).
WHAT DREAMS MAY COME: In N.Y., Larry Brooks reported NHL Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist is the "newly named spokesperson" for MSG's Garden of Dreams Foundation. The foundation, whose "mission is to make dreams come true for children in crisis," represents "all of the Garden properties," including the Rangers, Knicks, WNBA Liberty, MSG Network and Radio City Music Hall (N.Y. POST, 1/10).
