Surprise Saw An Increase In Online Ticket Sales
For Royals, Rangers Spring Training Games |
Surprise (AZ) Stadium officials reported "modest gains in spring-training ticket sales revenue" for the Royals and Rangers during the opening weekend of Cactus League ticket sales, according to Lily Leung of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The two clubs, which share the stadium, saw ticket sales from January 3-5 rise to 41,191 from 38,435 in '08, a 7.1% increase from last year's first weekend. The Royals "slightly outperformed the Rangers in ticket sales, at 20,712 and 20,479, respectively." The city also "saw an improvement in ticket revenues," as sales grossed $413,244, up from $391,594 last year, reflecting a 5.5% increase. Admission prices "for all areas, except for the lawn, were raised $1 this year." Leung noted although people are "tightening their spending, these numbers are evidence that fans still want to shell out money to watch their favorite teams play." The city also saw an "increase in online ticket sales, which may mean the stadium could welcome more out-of-towners, particularly those" in the L.A. area (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 1/9).
ON DECK CIRCLE: In Phoenix, Elias Arnold reported the city of Goodyear, Arizona, "wants a part of the action if [MLB] decides to move another fall league" to the state. Last month, MLB ended a three-year contract with the Hawaii Winter Baseball league, a minor-league development program similar to the Arizona Fall League. The removal of the Hawaii Winter Baseball league "creates an opportunity for the spring-training parks like the new Goodyear Ballpark" to host additional games (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 1/10).
