Moores To Remain Padres Majority Owner Even After Moorad Deal

Moores Expected To
Remain Involved With MLB
Padres Owner John Moores will "remain as majority owner of the Padres for three or four years, even if the ongoing negotiations" with a prospective ownership group led by former D'Backs General Partner & CEO Jeff Moorad "yields an agreement," according to MLB sources cited by Tom Krasovic of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Moorad "eventually would assume the largest financial stake in the club, but not for a matter of years." But at "some point this year, Moorad would assume a powerful decision-making role within the front office, with the added clout of being the majority owner in waiting and a minority owner in the near term." Krasovic noted beyond the financial details, one motivation "fueling plans to set a lengthy transition is to ensure Moores remains active both on major league committees and as a member of the inner circle" to MLB Commissioner Bud Selig. Selig plans to retire after the 2012 season, and some execs "expect Moores primarily will represent the Padres with MLB through that time." Sources close to Moores said that he would "benefit the Padres by continuing to help MLB shape future terms relating to industry resource allocation" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/11). Meanwhile, Krasovic reported MLB execs expect Padres CEO Sandy Alderson to "leave the Padres at some point this year" if Moorad does take over the front office. Moorad has indicated he holds Alderson in high regard, but MLB execs "doubt Alderson will stay beyond 2009 if Moorad comes aboard because the two are used to doing similar jobs." Alderson is in the "final year of his contract and doesn't have a stake in Padres ownership" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/11).
