Review Barclays Center Plans, Save Money |
Plans for the Nets' Barclays Center "may be scaled back to save" Nets Owner and Forest City Ratner (FCR) CEO Bruce Ratner, who is developing the arena as part of the Atlantic Yards Project in Brooklyn, "millions in construction costs," according to sources cited by Lisberg & Sederstrom of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The sources indicated that FCR has "brought in 'value engineering' companies to review architect Frank Gehry's blueprints to save money and keep the project afloat amid a cash crunch that has stopped all work at the site." FCR spokesperson Joe DePlasco denied reports that Gehry "had been axed." DePlasco: "Frank Gehry has not been removed from the project." Gehry did not comment on the matter. The cost of Barclays Center has been reported to be as high as $1B, and sources said Ratner is "looking to value engineers to do the arena less expensively and get that dollar amount down. ... They are looking at the arena from inside out and upside down to see how to bring the arena to life less expensively." A source noted that cutting costs could include "using less expensive materials, a different configuration or bringing in a less expensive architect" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 1/9). The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Matthew Futterman notes the "price tag of other recently developed arenas has been much lower" than Gehry's design for Barclays Center (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 1/9).
