Baseball TV Leads List Of Potential New Canadian Channels
Baseball TV leads a list of "potential new sports channels for Canadian television in 2009 and 2010," and if a deal "can be reached, Rogers Media would introduce the Canadian version of MLB Network," according to William Houston of the GLOBE & MAIL. Rogers Media "would take programming from MLB Network, add Canadian content, and make the channel, titled Baseball TV, available to distributors." Rogers Cable "would carry" the net and "so, probably, would other companies." A Bell TV spokesperson said the company would "look at it very seriously." Houston noted Rogers has been "negotiating with MLB for a Canadian broadcasting partnership." If the channel is approved, Canadian content requirements "would start at 15[%] in the first year and rise to 35[%] by the channel's third year."
OTHER CANADIAN SERVICES: CBC Sports Exec Dir Scott Moore expects the company's new all-sports channel, CBC SportsPlus, to "start in the early months of 2010." Meanwhile, Houston noted new broadcasting regulations "will remove restrictions on TSN2," and the channel "will no longer be required to devote the majority of its programming to encore presentations." Also, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is "moving slowly on the Canadian Olympic Committee's application for English and French-language amateur sports channels" (GLOBESPORTS.com, 1/7).
