Nationwide Tour Event In Rochester Taking At Least One-Year Hiatus

After Four-Year Run, Nationwide Tour Taking
Break In Rochester Due To Lack Of Sponsors
Rochester will be without its Nationwide Tour event this summer, as the Xerox Classic, which had a four-year run at Irondequoit Country Club, is "taking at least a one-year hiatus," according to Sal Maiorana of the ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE. Xerox' title sponsorship contract expired in '08 after the event was played in August, and the company -- "citing the harsh economic climate -- has opted not to sign a new deal." Since "no other title sponsor could be found," Rochester Broadway Theater League (RBTL) President & CEO Don Jeffries, whose company organized the event, "informed the PGA Tour that the tournament would have to take at least this year off." Jeffries: "When Xerox dropped the sponsorship, we made it very clear to the PGA Tour that RBTL would not be interested in hosting if we couldn't get a title sponsor. With the economic times the way they are, they just couldn't put up money to sponsor a golf tournament when they're laying people off; it wasn't a doable deal." Jeffries said that "several local companies were contacted in an effort to find new sponsorship, but none was willing to put up the purse money, which last year was $600,000." Maiorana notes Jeffries "continues to shop for a title sponsor in the hope that the event can be added to the Nationwide schedule in 2010." Jeffries said that a deal "would likely have to be in place by September or October" (ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE, 1/8).
