Leonsis Reveals Capitals Posting Gains In Many Key Areas

Leonsis Says Support For
Capitals Is As Strong As Ever
Capitals Owner Ted Leonsis on his blog wrote that his "metrics -- [fan] emails primary among them -- demonstrate that hockey in D.C. is as strong as it ever has been, and it is continuing to grow at a rapid pace." The Capitals are currently 27-11-3 on the season, and attendance at games is "up more than 30% when compared with last year," with the team already having recorded 10 sellouts, two more than during the '07-08 season. The team's TV ratings on CSN Mid-Atlantic also "have steadily increased and are 130% better than a year ago." And traffic to WashingtonCaps.com "continues to grow as monthly visits (139%), monthly unique visitors (87%) and page views (196%) have increased dramatically when compared with last year." Leonsis also noted the team's merchandise sales are "up nearly 42%" (TEDSTAKE.com, 1/7).

FLYING HIGH: In DC, Thomas Boswell writes of the Capitals, "Like this whole town that has awakened in the last 10 months to its sizzling young hockey team with a sudden and unexpected explosion of puck passion, I've gotten Capped. ... My friends, who know I've covered the Caps 100 times, but often after I lost a coin flip, ... can mock me freely now." The team "may sell every ticket for the rest of the season, though 15 to 18 sellouts in the last 21 games is the safe bet," as in the past year, season ticket sales "have doubled." Also, DC "upgraded the main HD video board and sound system as well as the ribbon boards at Verizon Center," which means Capitals games are "now a red-pulsing light and rock show." Boswell: "It's about time somebody clicked. The Wizards haven't raised the roof since they were Bullets. The Nats get a free park, then fuss about the rent. So turns out, it's Caps fans who get to be proud, get to tell us what we've been missing. The restaurants around Verizon Center are full of them, most in Caps jerseys" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/8).
