Statue Honoring Penguins Co-Owner Mario
Lemieux Is Planned For Entrance To Arena
In Pittsburgh, Jeremy Boren reports the steel-and-concrete underpinnings of the Penguins' new Consol Energy Center "could be ringed with colorful artwork by Hill District youngsters by summer, under the first of at least three public art projects planned" for the arena. Pittsburgh-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority (SEA) Project Exec Doug Straley said that planning officials have "raised half of the $100,000 sought from area nonprofits to pay for the 'Construction as Canvas' project, a temporary art display that would remain on or near construction fencing until the arena opens in summer 2010." Meanwhile, Penguins CEO Ken Sawyer said that a statue honoring Penguins co-Owner and former C Mario Lemieux is "planned for the entrance on Centre Avenue." The statue "would not be part of the SEA's public art plans" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 1/7).

THE GREAT OUTDOORS: Red Sox officials yesterday said that "because of construction that occurs each offseason as part of annual improvements made to Fenway Park, the team has not considered hosting an outdoor [hockey] game but it would be something to explore in the future." Boston Univ. (BU) men's hockey coach Jack Parker said Boston College and BU at Fenway "would draw a lot of interest in a one-shot deal. The Bruins and Montreal would be even a bigger deal. The problem was Fenway kept renovating and wasn't available to us in the winter" (BOSTON HERALD, 1/7).

Walnut Mayor Asking Industry Officials For New
Environmental Analysis For Proposed Stadium
CALIFORNIA DREAMS: In California, Ben Baeder reported Walnut Mayor Joaquin Lim, in a closed-door meeting Monday, asked City of Industry officials for a new environmental analysis of Majestic Realty Chair & CEO Ed Roski's proposed NFL stadium, "which could delay the project for more than a year." Walnut has "hired an attorney to explore action to stop the stadium project." City of Industry Mayor Dave Perez said that he is "willing to ask" Roski to "wait for a new" environmental impact report. Perez said that he is "worried that no matter how much additional environmental research is conducted, Walnut will still sue Industry" (PASADENASTARNEWS.com, 1/6).

PACKED HOUSE: In Milwaukee, Silverstein & Mcginn report the Packers' new Nitschke Field practice site "probably will be ready in late July." There are "plans for about 2,500 seats." Packers President & CEO Mark Murphy said of the facility, "It will be much better for our fans. And you're not going to be behind a fence. It will run the length of the field. They're not very high but you'll be elevated a little bit" (Milwaukee JOURNAL SENTINEL, 1/7).
