Peterson Says Nothing Developing Between Him And Dolphins

Peterson Says Connection To Ross Does Not
Mean He Will Join Dolphins
Former Chiefs President, GM & CEO Carl Peterson, two days after "causing a stir at Dolphin Stadium" by attending Sunday's Ravens-Dolphins AFC Wild Card game, said that "nothing is cooking between him and the Dolphins," according to Edgar Thompson of the PALM BEACH POST. Peterson, addressing media yesterday in K.C. for the first time since resigning, said that his past role as President & GM of the USFL Philadelphia Stars when the team was owned by Dolphins co-Owner Stephen Ross "doesn't mean he'd be coming to South Florida to join Ross once he becomes the majority owner of the team." Peterson: "At this point it's not even worth discussing because it hasn't been discussed" (PALMBEACHPOST.com, 1/6). Peterson said that he has "no plans to retire but wouldn't speculate on recent reports that he would join the Dolphins' front office." Peterson: "I'm going to sit back and see what may become available. I'm in no rush to do anything. This business can wear on you. Maybe I can be a consultant" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 1/7). Peterson: "I started on the personnel side and the coaching side and I always loved that. But a major part of this business now for any franchise is the business administration side. You've got to be good in that to be competitive with 31 other teams." Peterson added that it "would be hard to sever completely his ties to football" (PALM BEACH POST, 1/7).

READY TO LEAD? In Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde cited a source Monday as saying that "everything looks on track" for Dolphins co-Owner Wayne Huizenga's impending sale of 95% of the team to Ross to close this offseason. But the source added that there also is a chance that the "bad economy becomes the best new for the Dolphins fans," as it "could delay this deal, prolong Huizenga's ownership and keep" Dolphins Exec VP/Football Operations Bill Parcells as "football overlord." Hyde: "At the very least, Ross would get more time as an apprentice owner. Judging by recent events, he needs it. Before he even has closed the deal, Ross has made the kind of missteps a lot of first-time owners do and this team can't afford" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 1/6). In Miami, Greg Cote wrote of Ross possibly "driving out" Parcells, "What a terrible choice that would be and what a clumsy way to usher in your ownership -- a move that would smack of cronyism." Cote: "I think the public courtship of Peterson has effectively made up [Parcells'] mind and that he'll activate the contract clause that allows him to leave" (MIAMIHERALD.com, 1/5). Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan said of Parcells and Ross, "This is so not a marriage made in heaven, so bad a match, it's unimaginable. … There is no way he can comfortably work with (Ross).” ESPN's Tony Kornheiser said, "If you lose Bill Parcells, you lose the best guy out there.” Ryan: “Look at Parcells right now at this point in time. Has there ever been a more desirable potential free agent executive ever?” (“PTI,” ESPN, 1/6).
