Canadian Bell Mobility Clients Can Receive
Exclusive NHL Mobile Content For Fee |
Bell Mobility, the NHL and the NHLPA yesterday announced a partnership that will deliver mobile NHL content and services in Canada exclusively to Bell Mobility clients. Bell Mobility clients will be able to access live NHL games on NHL Audio, in-game and post-game video highlights, live NHL games through NHL Centre Ice Mobile, and text alerts directly on their mobile phones. The package also includes the ability to download NHL wallpapers and ringtones and more. The service starts at $8 per month plus applicable data charges (Bell). The GLOBE & MAIL's Matt Hartley reports blackout restrictions "put in place to protect the NHL's lucrative television contracts will prevent fans from watching their home team in local markets, similar to the system the league employs with its GameCenter Live Internet video service" (GLOBE & MAIL, 1/7). NHL COO John Collins said of reaching fans through the new deal, "We know they're online, we know they're using mobile. This is another way to reach them." NHLPA Chief of Business Affairs Mike Ouellet: "It's a chance to expose the players to fans in a new way. We've got a great opportunity to capture new content. This is only the beginning." The CP's Chris Johnston noted the current product is "only available in Canada, although Collins believes it will be expanded to the U.S., once the league's deal with Verizon comes due at the end of the year" (CP, 1/6).
