Scheduling Conflicts Put Bobcats On Road For Much Of Second Half

Bobcats Competing With Public
Events For Winter Arena Dates |
For the second straight season, the Bobcats' schedule was "heavily front-loaded with home games," because the CIAA conference men's and women's basketball tournaments, the circus and the Charlotte Jumper Classic horse-jumping event "take up key dates" on Time Warner Cable Arena's schedule between late January and early April, according to Rick Bonnell of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. The CIAA and circus dates "can't be moved, and if the Bobcats weren't booking those events, they wouldn't be doing their part in the public-private partnership that built the arena." There is a "real issue there for the Bobcats to try to finesse." If the Bobcats have a "bad start, it all but dooms their season, considering how tough it is to win consistently on the road in March and April," and as far as selling tickets, it is "tough to get people excited about the NBA while the NFL is at its peak." Bobcats President & COO Fred Whitfield said that he will "address this in the off-season, lobbying the league to fit more home games in around the arena's February-March-April obligations" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/4).
